While she and her companions burned many of these books, there is one that they praised and saved from the fire: Amadís de Gaula. This novel stems from a number of sources which were collected by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo in the fifteenth century, and printed in three volumes, to which he added a fourth about the son of Amadís: Las sergas de Esplandián. The novels about Amadís became well known throughout the world, and received many translations into English going as far back as the version by Anthony Munday in 1596. Perhaps the best known modern English translation is that of Robert Southey in 1803.
