In the Southwestern United States, there is a tradition of storytelling called “cuentos.” I like to call them platicas (plain talk), hearsay, or free-for-all chisme (gossip-like). Cuentos may be truths or fantasies, whatever the teller chooses to call them. They are full of life experienced in the Southwestern U.S. and differ from European life and tradition. These cuentos and poetry present a picture of a traditional life such as work ethic, spiritual celebrations, picking piñon, relationships, and more. They offer an opportunity for the readers to enjoy their own conversations about days gone by, and some still present. The conversations could open doors to deeper thought such as their relationships of the past and present to one another and to the gente (people).The cuentos and platicas in this book are written to re-encounter and strengthen our roots and understand who we are and where we have been. These stories strengthen beliefs that are still here and can inspire us to know that we can think differently. Also included are stories from Mexico and Latin America to show that not all cuentos come from Spain or Europe.
