Four million Italians left their homeland in a great wave of immigration to the USA early in the 20th century. RICH WITH CHILDREN tells the dramatic story of one family. Gioacchino Sammataro and Anna Librizzi arrived as “foreigners” and gave birth to 14 American citizens in the “Immigrant City” of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Gioacchino is an "Everyman" who escaped crushing poverty in Sicily to discover endless, sweltering 10-hour days in a textile mill and cold crowded nights in a tenement slum. He faced the Great Depression, world wars and the famous Lawrence Labor Strike of 1912. Against all odds he was able to buy a home. Deep inside the city's "Little Italy" wife Anna transformed it into a bustling planet – half Italian, half-Yankee. This is not the stereotyped Sicilian family of Hollywood. The Sammataros survived on honest hard work -- not in spite of their large family -- but because of it. With their heritage slipping away, descendants of Anna and Gioacchino collected facts, legends and hundreds of photographs. Their story, dramatically told, goes to the very heart of the American condition. About the Authors J. Dennis Robinson writes on New Hampshire history. He is editor of the popular web portal SeacoastNH.com. His most recent book is Wentworth by the Sea: The Life and Times of a Grand Hotel. Lynne Vachon has a Masters degree in American History from the University of New Hampshire. She lives in Somersworth with her husband Bob and their two children.
