socially-challenged
Socially Challenged
Introduction Why now? Why strive to write a book at this point in my life? Writing has been my passion although I ve never been serious about getting a book published. This past year I was diagnosed with memory loss consistent with possible onset of Alzheimer s disease and I am taking the prescribed drug Namenda. Writing might assist in working with the drug by helping to stimulate brain neurons. Likewise, in this time in history when the United States and world economies are nearing the Great Depression status, some of my children and their families are in dire financial straits. This project could serve as a healthy diversion for my concerned parent/grandparent disposition. The summer of 2011 two registered nurses who were my supervisors over fifty years ago and with little contact since, decided to pack our seventy something bodies into my vehicle that accommodates my physical limitations and we headed north three hours from Eagle Bend, MN to Crookston, MN to have lunch with our eighty-one year old former nurse anesthetist supervisor, Sister Jacquelyn. We must be risk takers. It was the highest heat index day of the summer, 103 degrees. In addition, we had no idea of how one and other s personalities had evolved during the past half-century and yet we three chose to spend six hours that day together in a vehicle for the journey. Our sweet, angelic Sister Jacquelyn hosted us to a few hours of life in a monastery with retired sisters who manage to keep busy smiling and doing and being in a primarily non air conditioned facility. During lunch other sisters stopped to chat with us and asked if I was a nurse too? I disclosed that I was a nurse s aide who had lived an isolated existence on a farm near Browerville and that these three women were instrumental in guiding me through experiences in a hospital setting thereby cushioning my transition from being socially naïve to cautiously taking the calculated risk of leaving my protective farm family life environment for life in Los Angeles California. Those who lived and worked with me might read this account and say, It wasn t like that at all . They are probably right. Most names of characters have been changed to respect the innocent and guilty as well. Some embellishing or diminishing of situations was used to aid in the imagery flow of the story. This is not meant to be an absolute account of facts. It is, however, creative non-fiction, the truth as perceived through the eyes and ears of a young naïve country bumpkin who was committed to doing what was asked of her in a setting where nurse aides were given minimal information, I assume, for confidentiality reason. Writing this account has given me a deeper perspective for what was going on in me and others during a most vulnerable time in my life and how it prepared me for life.
ASIN: 087839639X
VSKU: BVV.087839639X.G
Condition: Good
Author/Artist:Millie Hoelscher Moran|North Star Press
Binding: Paperback
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: The item shows wear from consistent use, but it remains in good condition and works perfectly.
