When I get them, basic training is over, and some of them have qualified for my college class - where they will open and become acquainted with the gift of their imaginations. It's always Christmas morning in my class, because the gift of imagination is forever replenished - by experience, by feedback, by experimentation. As they write essays, fiction, and in this collection, poetry, they are developing their own styles and discovering themselves. On the verge of adulthood, they reveal all of their insecurities and their enthusiasm - to grow, explore and change the world. As one of them says in their poem, \"I am ready to begin.\" Indeed they are, and I am in awe of their talent.\nIt was my own English teacher many years ago who encouraged me to become a writer. I took his advice and never regretted it. I was very fortunate -my plays and screenplays were produced and found audiences.
