You say this is a Volkswagen Bus?\"\n\nBefore we could so much as react, there was this loud report sounding like a gunshot, at which time the Bus came to an immediate shuddering halt.\n\nHalfway through the process of \"knife-cuts-cheese,\" I was suddenly aware of the bear pushing hard with his nose through the open wing window.\n\n\"What year is it. I mean not like today, but the Bus?\"\n\nDeena was immediately by his side shrieking, \"Oh my God! Oh my dear God!\" and was pressing her hand against his head, head and hand now covered with blood.\n\n\"I had me a Bus once, but then my girlfriend got drunk and wrapped it around a telephone pole, same paint and everything.\"\n\nHere comes the forklift, fast and straight at me, forks bouncing and clattering in the hysterical manner of a man or a machine forced to perform beyond the boundaries of what it was made for.\n\n\"I mean like these things are way cool. They should still be making them anymore.\"\n\nHe let out a long breath of air and took another look at my license. \"You're a long way from home, aren't you, sonny.\"\n\n\"Go back! Make a wide circle and go back! If you stop you're going to break through!\"\n\nWe simply parked the Bus in the hotel parking lot, and by swiveling only one chair, converted the Bus from transportation to real estate, a cozy little condo at the base of the ski slopes.\n\nNo two ways about it. It was a cop. A state trooper by another name, and he wasn't just following us. He was driving side by side, matching out speed, and looking directly in at Mary Teal.\n\n\"I bet you get a lot of mileage out of it. Like when you're driving per gallon.\"\n\nWhen he parked behind me and put on his flasher, it was like the size of his rig offered up the challenge, \"Go ahead. Hit me. Unmake your day.\"\n\nLittle Wolf nodded at this and then turned his attention to the setup behind the front seat. \"It looks like home in here, only smaller. Where do you keep your woman?\"\n\nSince I was driving backwards while peering into the dark, I couldn't help but feeling like a small amount of yes in a big field of no.\n\nThe Bus was a home away from home was what it was, a place to love and keep you while you spent a weekend at the beach, or even as a temporary address as you goofed off between jobs.
