The schoolhouse was used from 1798 to 1927. Henry Ford moved the small one-room schoolhouse approximately 20 miles from Redstone Hill in Sterling, Massachusetts to Sudbury. The schoolhouse was the impetus for the poem "Mary Had a Little Lamb", based on Sterling resident Mary Elizabeth Sawyer (born 1806), who, at only nine years old, helped nurse a sickly newborn lamb abandoned by its mother back to health. The poem speaks to the importance of loving and honoring all living creations, even a tiny lamb. Mary's kind treatment of the lamb correlates with the lamb's complete devotion to her. The connection between Mary and the lamb highlights the beauty and happiness that comes from respect and appreciation of nature. Great controversy has always existed around who wrote the poem. Henry Ford's "The Story of Mary and Her Little Lamb" gave John Roulstone the writer's credit, but Sarah Josepha Hale, who published "Poems for Our Children" in 1830, most commonly gets attributed to the legendary nursery rhyme. Hale added three stanzas to Roulstone's original poem to heighten the moral message. The Redstone Schoolhouse still stands and is available for tours. The statue of America's most famous lamb stands in Sterling's Town Common. The Sawyer homestead, where Mary grew up, was destroyed in 2007 due to arson and a replica now exists in Sterling on the same site at the junction of Maple Street and Rugg Road. The homestead is on the U.S. Register of Historic Places. Another landmark the lamb has impacted: Boston's historic Old South Meeting House. The historic building underwent preservation in the 1870s from the proceeds of socks knit from the little lamb's wool and Mary's autograph. The nursery rhyme is beloved and revered by many greats. Paul and Linda McCartney wrote a song in 1972 called "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Well before McCartney, Lowell Mason, in the 1830s, set the nursery rhyme to a melody. The greatest tribute to the words, however, was in 1877, when Thomas Edison invented the phonograph and read the first words: "Mary had a little lamb." Five simple words have touched so many hearts and broken many barriers for over two centuries. Even as life gets more complicated and technology-laden, we can always find solace and gratitude in this classic treasure.
ASIN: 1735822825
VSKU: BVV.1735822825.A
Condition: Acceptable
Author/Artist:Leslie Yeransian
Binding: Paperback
Note: Any images shown are stock photographs and product may differ from what is shown.
Condition Notes: The item is very worn but is perfectly usable.
