She begins to turn the school upside down!\n\nIn chapter two, the teachers get the training in learner-centered practices and Malia and the principal create a shared vision with the parents at Back-to-School Night. The Student Council give feedback and produce a Code of Collaboration and rubric so the students can learn together more effectively. Needed behavior goals are written and the Standard Operating Procedures are jointly created to make the students more independent with routine tasks. A Parking lot tool is established to provide a place for students to give feedback on the learning environment.\n\nChapter three has Malia wanting to be able to answer the question, “What are you learning?”. She advocates for herself to be able to focus on the concepts she needs to learn and celebrate what she already knows. She writes plans and goals to be able to track her own learning.\n\nIn chapter four, Malia takes the ideas from her classroom and encourages them to go schoolwide. With the creation of proficiency ladders, learners now want choice in how to accomplish and present evidence of proficiency.\n\nIn chapter five shows Malia and her classmates working at different paces due to the amount of background information each learner has. Learners compared this new way of learning to a video game where they can continue to work at a level until they accomplish it. The teachers make sure to post rubrics and exemplars around the classroom so the learners know the expectations. If students finish early, they can help others or create a real-world application of their skills and knowledge.\n\nIn chapter six, students began to see the power of celebrations at the individual, classroom and school level.\n\nThis book explores the change process that leads to students becoming learners and teachers becoming facilitators of learning.
