Such a sentiment is not lost on the contemporary poet. Our work serves as witness of life happening around us, to us. The challenge is to endure through pain and heartache, thrive in pleasure and hope. This project is a celebration of the quiet giants who lend to our very survival, who reflect our existence on this planet. Trees hold the mysteries of life and time and to keep truths of humanity. We often take them for granted, losing out on the grand lessons they can teach on patience, peace, stillness. Though not explicitly about the trees themselves, these works recognize how they can become metaphors, how they intersect with the stories we tell each other about ourselves, how we see ourselves and the world.
“And perhaps my body is too well-practiced in the art of unblooming”
“Foliage looks so much a toothless mouth, howling against the season.”
When the words we encounter gather and heap centuries on our heads, take up more space than the cicadas occupying southern trees, we are moved to write:
“And ain’t that just like a poem? Howling? Taking up space? Daring to speak without anyone’s permission?”
