The guide provides -- well-researched and carefully curated historical background information precise and current insights on how and what geologic processes have created the landscape seen today maps and detailed route directions so travelers won't miss points of interest As a geographer's handbook, it is lavishly illustrated with photos and detailed route maps, so the reader will know what to expect and where to find it. The National Scenic Byway Program was established in 1991 by an Act of Congress to help recognize, preserve, and enhance selected roads throughout the country with outstanding scenic, historic, cultural, natural, recreational, and archaeological qualities. The roads are nominated for national status as a National Scenic Byway or All-American Road by a state, Native American tribe, or a federal land management agency after the road has been designated by one of those agencies as a Scenic Byway. Currently, ten Scenic Byways or All-American Roads in Oregon have been granted national recognition. This guide includes those ten routes, plus three other notable routes that have received Oregon state recognition. Judith Warren takes pride in being a well-informed traveler who uses the knowledge she gained as she earned degrees in Geography from U.C. Berkeley, supplemented with current and evolving studies on the evolution of the landscape and the cultural history of the routes she travels.
