Description

All quiet on the Western Front: Paul Bäumer, a German student turned soldier, recounts his experience at the front during the First World War. Harsh training, hunger, and constant fear erase any heroic ideas. Friendship with his comrades sustains what little humanity remains as trenches, gas, and shelling strip them down to pure instinct. When he returns home, Paul feels alien to everything; school and family no longer speak to him. Through successive losses, he understands that his generation has been broken before it could grow up, even if the front sometimes seems “quiet.”
