Animal Soul: Poems for the Planet

“Animal Soul” is a collection of sonnets that explores the habits and traits of our fellow animals. Deep in our psyches, we know that every animal has a particular energy like no other. The word “animal” comes from root word “anima”, meaning “breath” or “soul.” Our language reveals our awareness that all sentient beings possess the breath of life and their own essence that we recognize as “soul.” Images and impressions of animals came to me as a “download” of dreams during the year preceding the pandemic. These nocturnal visitors seemed to be sharing their soul energy and their deep desire to heal us from our isolation and false sense of separation. Animals have given us their meat, their skins, their bones, and their beauty since human time began. They offer themselves as totems and symbols for our aspirations and dilemmas. They ask only for their rightful place in our shared ecology and in our hearts. "Animal Soul" celebrates our kinship with animals in the dance of life. The sonnet is a 14-line poem with a specific rhyme scheme. The word sonnet translates as "little song." Sonnets traditionally reflect upon a single notion or sentiment with a conclusion, insight, or question raised in the last two lines. The sonnets offered in "Animal Soul" are intended to be philosophical, humorous, and factually accurate descriptions of an animal and the parallel reality it occupies alongside humans in today's world.
