It’s okay to be afraid. But sometimes it’s good to examine WHY you’re afraid. Are you afraid because something or someone is different than you? Are you afraid because you don’t understand them? Maybe you’re afraid because they don’t look anything like you. Or possibly, a misunderstanding or miscommunication, lead to your fear. Take a moment and think about it. Racism, prejudice and discrimination all grow out of fear. But if you employ empathy and understanding, you might realize you have similarities, too. Learning about someone’s traditions or customs, their culture and values, and their likes and dislikes, can help strengthen your understanding of them and maybe lessen your fear. And who knows, you might find out that you both brush your teeth the same way or you both have a harry Uncle Rich. You never know.
