Salt has been a critical resource sought out by people cross-culturally since premodern times; however, modern-day examples of traditional salt-making methods are rare. This book presents a study on a traditional salt-making method still practiced by a handful of salt artisans in Bohol Province, Philippines. Known locally as asin tibuok, this salt is made using a labor-intensive process that involves extracting and processing salt from seawater and boiling enriched brine in earthenware pots, producing hardened rock salt. The book describes the step-by-step process of making asin tibuok and explores the relationship between the native materials used in the production process and the environment. This includes a rare modern-day example of how hand-made, low-fired earthenware pottery is used in salt production. The book also provides a brief historical context of salt making in the Central Philippines. Illustrations are used extensively to accompany the text. Appropriate for both academics and non-academics.
