Have you found beautiful jewels by the shore - pieces of glass in shades of emerald green and cobalt blue, dreamy white and warm brown? Perhaps even a rare lavender or pink? This is beach glass, which starts out as a bottle or a marble or a window, with a design and an intention set. But it is only after breaking and tumbling that these objects turn into the rare gems we collect by the shore and take home with us. Just like that beach glass, we start out fresh-scrubbed and new, expectations set for our lives. And like the glass objects that break in the storms that tumble them, our own intentions also shatter as life tumbles us. Beach glass teaches us that at first the broken edges are sharp and jagged, dangerous and painful to touch. But eventually these edges smooth out. When a piece of prized beach glass finally emerges to be found on the sand by the lucky collector, its rare beauty is new and different…not in spite of the breaking, but because of it. We too are formed new with time: more beautiful for having survived our own storms. Here the author tells her own stories of hunting precious beach glass up and down the beautiful western coast of North America - from a tree-covered island in Washington state, to the protected coves of Laguna Beach, California, to a hidden bay in Baja California, Mexico, as well as the stories of those who searched the shorelines with her: friends, children, spouse, beloved dogs…even a pirate. Entwined with her adventures are the insights revealed by these precious jewels, such as glimpses into parenting that defies white-picket expectations, a marriage in diverse seasons, and a woman observing and rediscovering herself amongst both storms and calm.
