Becoming an American Doctor

Dr. Jalkennen Joseph, MD, grew up on a remote island in the South Pacific Ocean, never expecting to make history as the second physician from his homeland to earn a US medical education. His early years, shaped by rich indigenous traditions and culture, set the stage for a challenging journey through immigration and war in pursuit of higher learning, ultimately leading him to become both a US citizen and a physician. From a young age, Dr. Joseph displayed curiosity and academic talent, which led him to move to Guam, a US territory, in search of the American Dream through education. Inspired by Micronesian values and patriotism, he not only became a US citizen but also joined the military, serving two tours in Iraq, where he discovered his passion for medicine. After his military service, Dr. Joseph overcame the common obstacles veterans face and dedicated himself to his studies. With determination and perseverance, he was accepted into medical school and graduated, becoming a board-certified emergency medicine physician. His career includes leadership roles as a medical director and a fierce advocate for healthcare equity for his patients in the border city of Laredo and on his beloved home island of Pohnpei, Micronesia. Dr. Joseph's arduous journey from Micronesia paved the way for the resilience he needed to survive two tours in Iraq and to become a physician. His success is a true testament to the American Dream.
