Beloved Disciples: Living as We Were Created to Be

"Who are you?" We are continually challenged with that question. How would you answer? What word or phrase would you say defines who you are? I would like to propose an answer that may surprise or even challenge you. St. John probably would have called himself a fisherman. It took him 3 years of 24/7 spent with Jesus to consider himself a disciple of Jesus and then, 75 more years, to discover that he truly was a beloved child of God as well as disciple. We cannot be holy without being disciples and we cannot be disciples unless and until we believe that we are beloved. God created us in His image and likeness- to be holy as He is holy which is simply being who God created us to be. To do that, we must follow Ghrist, that is, become His disciples. It is not possible to walk with Jesus, do as He does, live as He lives, and love as He loves without knowing how very much we are loved. We can do nothing on our own,. Only secure in God’s love can we have the courage to trust in His promise to be with us as we journey to holiness and the heavenly kingdom. Our identity must always be based on our relationship with Christ. It is the core of who we are. Life is not about finding ourselves. We are not lost. It is about discovering who God created us to be. We are all beloved of God and if we allow Him control of our lives, He can love each one of us into being that beloved disciple that John describes in his Gospel.
