Based on a true story, this poignant tale follows the life of a Vietnamese family and their grueling journey to escape the rise of communism, through the eyes of several family members across two generations, from French colonialism to Vietnam’s division, to the fall of Saigon and the aftermath of war. Hanoi-born Tâm learns her mother’s business skills and finds unexpected love in an old friend, while her younger brother is pulled into the war against his will. But as the fall of French colonialism leaves room for communism to flourish, the family is swept into the strong tides of exodus to the south and forced to resettle in Saigon. The lives of three of Tâm’s eleven children become intertwined with the unstable political climate and take very different turns as the final stages of the war between North Vietnam and South Vietnam unravel, tearing apart the family and putting the existential meaning of life to test. Bittersweet Vietnam is a fascinating glimpse into ancestral Buddhist and Confucian traditions, a true depiction of war crimes, and a captivating tale of a family’s survival and search for freedom during foreign occupation, incessant war, and communism emergence.
