Early in the evening off the coast of Alaska, Herynn, a female orca and matriarch of her pod is escorted by two smaller males. The orcas enter a shallow semicircular cove deep enough to allow the mini pod to swim and dive. A few hours have passed and the pain in her abdomen increases. Now the area is brightly lit by the moon and stars. There are many inlets along the coast, but the pregnant female chose this one for its high kelp count and rocky shoreline. This was a perfect place to give birth to her third calf. A moment later a young one emerges into the cool ocean water and is quickly ushered to the surface for its first breath. Herynn nuzzles and coos her baby, and she decides to name him Okent. Mother and newborn are only together for a few hours when danger approaches. Quickly, she hides her newborn amongst the kelp and faces off the approaching predators. Young Okent is left alone and becomes panicked by a group of seals. He darts from his hiding space and becomes lost in his new ocean world. Separated from his pod, Okent encounters a great humpback called Babel. She rescues him and protects him through the next day and night. Babel decides to take Okent back to her pod and raise him as her own. Two seasons pass, and Okent is still not accepted in the humpback pod. He decides to leave and search out his own kind. Okent comes across an albino humpback named Hue, tangled in fishing nets. He aides in the humpbacks release and the two become friends and travel companions. They move with the ocean currents, always together and they protect each other from the dangers of the sea, eventually developing their own way of communicating. The two uniquely different species survive the many hardships of sea life and discover new parts of the ocean never explored by whale or orca. The two also learn that the biggest threat of sea life is actually on the surface. With a climactic battle to end this story, The humpback and orca choose to survive together.
