Born of an Eclipse

On the day Ahni is born, the moon slides in front of the sun darkening the world into an eerie twilight. Grammy beats her chest, pleading for the Sun God to sweep away the darkness. She lights cedar boughs to banish the dark spirits and to protect the new-born from evil. Pap curses. “Born bad! Best if we leave her deep in the forest for the wolves to do what they will with her.” Mam and Grammy refuse to give up the baby girl. Ahni shows no sign of being cursed until the horse Pap depends for his work dies. Distraught that he cannot feed his family, he turns to drink and brings Mam and Ahni to work at an isolated logging camp deep in a northern forest. Even though scrubbing and cleaning the cook shack is hard, Ahni becomes a favorite among some of the loggers. Unfortunately, it isn’t long before several misfortunes befall the camp. After a team of horses drowns, loggers are afraid what will happen next if Ahni—cursed by an eclipse—stays in the camp. She is forsaken by those she trusted, even her mother. Her lone journey to find home leads to an unexpected encounter.
