Description
This book looks at suffering and liberation from the perspective of both ancient sages such as Buddha, the sages of the Upanishads, Socrates, Stoics, Aristotle, Confucius as well as from the perspective of modern neuroscience. It considers the psychological forces that create suffering -- anger, aggression, greed, egocentrism, and then looks at the teachings of the ancient sages as well as techniques such as mindfulness mediation and cognitive behavioral therapy that are geared toward moving beyond the negative to a more positive approach--one of compassion, love, and cooperation. It also specifically looks at those parts of the brain that contribute to suffering--the subcortical regions including the amygdala, hypothalamus, reward circuit, and "selfing" parts of the brain -- the hippocampus, medial prefrontal cortex, and posterior cingulate. Finally it considers those areas of the brain that modulate the subcortical areas and open the possibility for a life of compassion and cooperation--the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the anterior cingulate, and the insula.
