Call Me Buf tells the story of James Buford Smith, who grew up in rural Southern Louisiana (first Estherwood, then Jennings) in the 1940s and 50s, a time and place very different from present-day America. Buford’s journey out of “the swamps” begins with an on-the-road adventure worthy of Kerouac, as he runs away from home and hitchhikes across the South and Midwest multiple times, eventually ending up at a Christian high school, where he finds acceptance. Through a rich experience of odd jobs trying to make ends meet, Buford follows God’s calling to become a minister, which takes him to posts in Louisiana and Kentucky before he lands in Dugger, Indiana, where he enjoys a decades-long career as a school counselor and preacher, becoming a spiritual pillar of that small community. Call Me Buf is the story of a unique man, absolutely committed to his ideals, who, through humble beginnings, with humble means, and amongst small-town people, is able to accomplish great things for God’s kingdom.
