Carmina habla con los muertos desde que era niña. Vive en un mundo de oscuridad donde el rencor y el deseo de venganza la han mantenido en la profundidad de una morada muerta, habitada por sentimientos tan negros como el carbón que se extrae en las minas de Coahuila. En un mantel borda con hilo negro los nombres de la familia Calderón, a quienes detesta y de los que se ha vengado difundiendo chismes. Al centro resaltan las puntadas con las que ha bordado El Cura, un sacerdote del pasado que para ella no merece decir su nombre. Al morir su hermana Ada, no tiene otra opción que volver al pasado, encontrarse con sus sobrinos nietos y tratar de reconstruir su historia. Por otro lado, la muerte de varios mineros en la mina Pasta de Conchos, despiertan en Bernardo, sobrino de Carmina, los recuerdos de la ausencia y la rabia de la injusticia que tratará de recomponer a través de su trabajo como periodista. En esta novela, Mónica Castellanos reconstruye el viaje a los infiernos, ya sean los personales, como los de Carmina o del propio Bernardo, así como los de esos mineros que murieron por la negligencia de muchos y que, una vez más, quedaron sepultados en el olvido.
