Children of the Choptank River: An Enchanted Childhood

In early 1953, an industrious family dragged a derelict yacht against the north bank of the Choptank River. There, guided by the design of the mother’s creative mind and led by the incredible skills of the father’s hands, the entire family pitched in to transform the wreck into a lovely summer vacation home for the Adams clan. No electricity, no running water, it was a magical step back into a time when American families could thrive with the simplest of necessities, the abundance of familial cooperation, and a nostalgic enjoyment of a more pristine environment. From their beach they could see where the Choptank River, named after indigenous people who lived there centuries ago, entered and drew tides from Maryland's magnificent Chesapeake Bay.
