The idea that Science and Technology on the one hand, and the Arts and Humanities on the other, are in basic conflict is not true now - nor has it ever been true. Since the technologies that warm and comfort us can also blast our world to bits or by altering climate and atmosphere, chill body and spirit bit by bit to the same ultimate end, it is essential for us to harness them to the task to the task of ensuring our survival as a species and of the world as a haven for life. To accomplish that, we must have a sound grasp of the Arts and Humanities and of Science and Technology and to see them in proper perspective and relation to each other, not as separate fields of knowledge and activity but as intimately interwoven and inseparable. This is, nevertheless, a book on the "Humanities". Earlier Humanities course work did not so much dispute or deny the importance of Tools and Technology to Man but rather, simply ignored, overlooked, or just touched very lightly upon the role they played. In this test, strong emphasis is put upon Tools and Technology for the light they shed upon the Humanities, to illustrate the mutual independence of the Arts and Sciences, and to show how they, in concert, affect the fabric of Human existence in all of its social, political, economic, and philosophical aspects.
