Clarence Darrow's Unlikely Friend

Research for a biography of the Rev. Dr. Clarence True Wilson led me to an interest, admiration and friendship with Clarence Darrow. What a remarkable friendship that developed between prohibition advocate Wilson and the famous defense attorney and agnostic Clarence Darrow. He was a man who set the moral compassion for this nation for fifty years. Would that we had such a moral leader today, be they Christian or agnostic. A relative of Wilson told me that before Wilson first debated Darrow on the subject of prohibition, he went to the Darrow apartment in Chicago to meet his opponent. Darrow was not at home. His wife Ruby greeted the Rev. Dr. Wilson at the door. When she found out who he was, she said, I cannot possibly know what you and my husband would have in common.
