Description

In Come What May: One Immigrant’s Story, experience the remarkable journey of a man whose life straddles borders, wars, and dreams. Raised in rural France, Anthony Michel Dzepina was the child of courageous Croatian immigrants from the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia, raising their children as World War Two raged around them. Through a refugee’s eyes, you’ll experience how he was shaped by the harsh realities of war and displacement. As he leaves behind the familiarity of his childhood, he hopes for a better future in America. With determination, he navigates the challenges of the new land, fueled by the promise of opportunity and the belief that hard work can pave the way to a brighter tomorrow. This memoir is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for courage, sacrifice, and triumph as one immigrant searches for identity, belongings, and the pursuit of happiness. Come What May: One Immigrant’s Story showcases the power of determination and hope in the face of adversity. This captivating memoir reminds us that no matter the obstacles, the human spirit can endure and thrive. Anthony Michel Dzepina brings together his memories in a story where emotion wins us over throughout the pages. He tells us about the fate of his Craotian parents who immigrated to France, his childhood in post-war Brittany, his need to go elsewhere which took him to California, where he has lived since 1967. This story sensitive and sincere reminds us of the France of yesteryear, recounts the pain of thwarted feelings in a turbulent world where hope has gone, to California perhaps. Anthony Michel Dzepina testifies to a quest which has shaped him throughout his life and which resonates in each of us, “so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (The Great Gatsby, novel by American author Francis Scott Fitzgerald published 1925). - Laurence Lotodé, Tenured Professor of English Anthony Michel Dzepina was born in 1939 near Nantes, France. He and his immigrant family were forced to flee the region under the Allied bombings of September 1943 and took refuge in a small agricultural village. On the eye of his twenty-second birthday, he immigrated to the United States where he obtained his engineering degree. His career took him throughout the United States and Europe. He now lives in Orange County, California, and frequently returns to Brittany, France, where he grew up and to Dalmatia, Croatia, the country of his parents and ancestors.
