Curse of the Yoeme opens with the assassination of Czar Alexander II. The story follows Shlomo and Golda, a young couple from Ukraine, whose families have been killed during a pogrom. With luck and perseverance, they manage to reach the silver-rich, mining town of Tombstone where one shameful act committed by Shlomo results in a curse placed on his family by the Yaqui Tribe.
The curse manifests itself in the form of various addictions. Most of the narrative follows Daniel Luminov, Shlomo’s great-grandson, as he struggles to function in society and maintain a relationship, all the while dealing with kleptomania.
Cajeme, a young Native American, enters Daniel’s life, first through his dreams and later in his work.
Taller than most of the other students, Cajeme walked with an easy slouch, as if on the alert for messages from the Earth. His long, black hair hung like a curtain alongside his oval, dark eyes. Narrow, with extraordinary cheekbones, his face radiated a vibrant force. He had yet to communicate in any way with the other students and only rarely with Dan. For the moment, though, among the plants, Cajeme seemed to be talking nonstop.
Closer, Dan heard what he was saying.
“There are no clouds in the west,” he whispered to the jades. “Even in the hills, it is warm and sunny,” he told the ferns. “See you tomorrow, Ramon. Señor Ruiz. Arsillia. Madonna. Señorita Gomez. Yvette,” he said, almost touching a blushing coleus, before turning and realize he was not alone.
As he grapples to understand his relationship with Cajeme, maintain a loving relationship and accept the fact that ordinary therapy could not stop his compulsion with stealing, an opportunity presents itself for Daniel to act instinctively and break the Curse of the Yoeme.
