Over the years, numerous authors have mentioned dates for when the various New Testament books were possibly written and who wrote them. This and the two other volumes are very unique because they do not promote a single viewpoint on the dating and authorships of the 27 New Testament books, either Christian or secular. Rather than concentrating on how just one side and perhaps another dates the New Testament books, I have attempted to provide a spectrum of ideas on how various late 20th and early 21st century Christian and secular scholars date each book. These scholars include conservative, moderate and liberal Christians (e.g., John A.T. Robinson, Jonathan Bernier, Raymond E. Brown, Bodie Hodge) as well as secularists (e.g., Bart D. Ehrman, Robert M. Price, Richard Carrier). The profoundly different interpretations of these various groups are readily seen in how they date 1 Timothy. Some Christians argue that Paul wrote 1 Timothy during the events mentioned in Acts 20:1-3. Other Christians think that Paul wrote 1 Timothy after he was released from house arrest as described in Acts 28:11-31. He was later rearrested and martyred before the end of Nero's reign in June 68 AD. In contrast, secularists argue that 1 Timothy is a forgery that was written later in the 1st century or perhaps well into the second.
This Volume discusses the 13 Pauline epistles and Hebrews. Volume 1 contains an introduction and Chapters on the four Gospels and Acts. Volume 3 will discuss the Catholic (Universal) epistles and Revelation. The views of various scholars are typically summarized in an introductory Table at the beginning of each Chapter. This Table includes the likely or possible author(s) of the book, summarizes when various scholars think that the book was written and identifies the oldest available manuscripts of the book (4th century AD and earlier). The chapters also contain probability graphs summarizing the dates, include Tables that summarize the dates from various scholars, identify the 2nd century Church Fathers that likely cited the book and other useful information.
