Diary of a Soldier Part II: The Forgotten war of 1812

The world is turning upside down. Just seventeen, young Zachary Warren Allerton joins the U.S. Navy in 1810 as talk of war consumes the nation. Like his father before him, who joined the Libert Boys at fifteen and fought in the Revolutionary war, Zachary wants to fight for freedom. He enlists in Boston and is assigned to one of the six new frigates in the U.S. Navy, the USS Constitution. His journal describes first-hand the horrors and honor of fighting at sea as he also records the war that is raking the country. The War on the Great Lakes, the burning of Washington and the defense of Fort McHenry that gave birth to America's National Anthem, are stories full of pathos, suffering, bravery and honor as the people of America took up arms once again against the might British Empire. The victor at New Orleans under 'Old Hickory', Andrew Jackson, fought after the war had officially ended, was the final chapter that led to an American victory. The war is best remembered by our National Anthem, battle mottos such as 'Don't Give Up the Ship' and 'I have yet begun to fight', and the USS Constitution gaining the nickname 'Old Ironsides'.
