Divine Benedictions: God’s grace to us is a collection of twelve heartwarming and affirming statements we find in Scripture which exemplify God’s grace to us. Good words from God and His representatives, given to His people as a blessing – is called a benediction. Benedictions, for many persons, appear as normal verses of Scripture, but under closer scrutiny, they become more personal and appeal directly to the individual’s situation. The verses(s) are ones that can be applied today, right now to your circumstances. They are words of encouragement, promise, direction or recommendation from God to us. Hearing a benediction or a blessing is very important; it gives us value, encouragement and worth. Maybe you remember your parent saying to you, “I am proud of you,” or “You did great on that job I gave you to do.” On the other hand, maybe you never heard those words from an authority figure, but always longed to hear them. Maybe your heart still aches to hear those words from a husband, wife, parent or even one of your children. Or maybe worse, you heard just the opposite - you only remember negative comments - “Can’t you do anything right?” “Will you ever amount to anything?” and you have spent your life trying to prove to someone you were able to do something.One of the classic Scriptural stories of the importance of a blessing or benediction is Isaac’s encounter with Esau after Jacob had deceived his father into thinking he was Esau. In keeping with customs of the time, Jacob ended up stealing the blessing/inheritance intended for Esau. When I read the following passage, my heart ached not only for Esau, but for all the children and grandchildren who may share the same painful cry. Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!” Then Esau wept aloud” Genesis 27:38. A benediction can be an affirmative Word from God to us, a statement of fact to encourage us, a promise to give us hope or statements describing values we can hang on to. One of the best known Benedictions is “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace; now and forevermore” (Number 6:22-26).
