As a nation, we were reveling in our international victories, shivering in the Cold War and beginning the struggle with our at home racial issues. Meanwhile, small Southern communities were peopled with families fighting their way out of poverty toward a bigger piece of the American pie. Coping with their own realities left them little time for concern about the larger issues.
