La singular asociación entre Jeffrey Archer y Francis J. Moloney nació en Roma, después de que Archer pidiera consejo al cardenal Carlo Maria Martini acerca de la persona que debía guiarlo a lo largo de este ambicioso proyecto. De entre sus numerosos antiguos alumnos del Pontificio Instituto Bíblico, el cardenal Martini eligió al profesor Francis J. Moloney, licenciado por dicho instituto en 1972 y doctorado por la Universidad de Oxford en 1975.
El proyecto era tan osado como sencillo. Archer escribiría una historia para los lectores del siglo XXI, mientras que Moloney se cercioraría de que el resultado revistiera credibilidad para un cristiano o judío del siglo I.
