Bold, sharp, and smart, the only person he fears is his nemesis, Jack Barley, the only one who could bring down his empire. Jack Barley is an eleven-year-old kid who kills a boy in self-defense, and then kills his family, so has to skip town before the authorities capture him and put his head in a noose. Henry Lloyd’s and Jack Barley’s stories run parallel until their inevitable faceoff. The Man narrates the close-ups of other characters that accompany Henry. James, a boy kidnapped from his village in Africa to be taken as a slave to the United States, where, over time, will become one of Lloyd’s most-trusted men. Jeremiah, a giant black man who refuses to speak the tongue of the enslavers, so white men think him mute and dumb. Virginia, heiress to a vast plantation in Alabama, who marries Lloyd, but for painful reasons must be parted from him.
