EXU - A Treaty on Brazilian Demonology: QUIMBANDA as Afro-Brazilian GOETIA

Historically, this is the most important Grimoire in the development of the controversial practice of witchcraft and sorcery called QUIMBANDA. The book of EXU, by Aluizio Fontenelle, is now available in the English language. EXU was originally published in 1954 by EDITORA AURORA in Rio de Janeiro. Not much can be found about the Author, but online sources mention him as having been born in 1913 and died in 1952, so his death predates the publication of the second edition to which we have access in the present days. This places the actual writing of the text somewhere between the 1940s and the early 1950s. The importance of this book is historic. It is not only valuable in its description of practices that were present in the context of Brazilian Spiritism as early as the 1940s; but also because it has become a cornerstone in the subsequent shaping of the different systems of QUIMBANDA that were structured in the latter half of the 20th century. It portrays the opinions, struggles and controversies of its own time and historical context; its contents, although valuable as research material, DO NOT REFLECT the thoughts and opinions of the publisher, the translator or any of the contributors that made this work possible.
