Finding Light

Reina is a 15-year-old unaccompanied minor who flees abuse and hardship in her home country to seek asylum in the United States. Traumatized by her past and haunted by the fear of deportation, Reina struggles to adapt to a new school and culture, with gaps in her formal education and few people she can trust. She is drawn to risky behaviors like vaping and drinking, and the local gang tempts her with promises of belonging and protection. Despite the allure, Reina is hesitant to join, having heard disturbing stories of what girls must do to become members and the dangers of trying to leave. With the support of a compassionate school social worker, Ms. Ramirez, and a group for girls facing similar challenges, Reina begins to heal and make positive choices. She finds her first job at a bakery, dedicates herself to her studies, and gradually builds a sense of safety and purpose. Against the odds, Reina graduates high school and, after a long process, becomes an American citizen. Her journey transforms her from a frightened newcomer into a confident, resilient young woman determined to help others find hope and belonging in their own lives. ---
