From the mid-1960s until the mid-1980s, many Australians, New Zealanders, British, Canadians, Americans and Europeans began their OE by travelling to Europe by the Overland routes between Kathmandu and London. After travelling around Europe, the return home for a few would be Overland through Africa - then emerging from the Dark Continent, Colonial status to a modern world of Independence and self-determination. This was the pre-social media/ cellphone era when communication with home was by an infrequent llightweight flimsy airletter or, if urgent, by telegram. To receive letters we relied on the now defunct 'Poste Restante' service offered by most chief post offices in the larger cities. It was an age of adventure and discovery. I was fortunate to have travelled these various routes, both as a passenger and, in later years, as a tour leader/courier. This book is autobiographical. How I viewed the Overland from a personal perspective. It is an account of a world now changed immeasurably and one I feel privileged to have been part of. In my early working years, I was fortunate enough to visit both Little Barrier Island and the Hen & Chickens, even then restricted-access wildlife sanctuaries, and one Christmas, I embarked on a cruise on the old Tofua, affectionately known as the ‘banana boat’, to the South Pacific Islands. This set the scene for my first Overland journey to London, and subsequent travels took me through Europe, into Brezhnev’s Soviet Union and finally across Africa, before returning by ship to NZ. This is a republication and expanded version of my earlier books, this time with colour photos taken during my travels. It is an insight into a time when international travel was still an adventure. This edition has a full bibliography.
