Fort Sumner, New Mexico New & Old As remembered by Mrs. Louisa Beaubien Barrett (1886-1943)

Louisa Beaubien Barrett was born in 1886 in Fort Sumner, New Mexico to Rebecca Abreu and Pablo C. Beaubien. Louisa married Howard Charles Barrett in Guadalupe, New Mexico on August 15, 1905, when she was 19 years old. They had five children: Howard, Paul, Frank, Marvin and Rebecca. She passed away in 1943 when she was 57 years old and is buried at the cemetery in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. This manuscript is transcribed by her great granddaughter Michele Busch. Louisa created this handwritten account of her knowledge of Fort Sumner by writing in cursive her memories on the back of old worksheets from the school and spare pieces of paper which have been kept in the family since its creation. The manuscript was passed to Michele Busch from her grandmother Rebecca Caroline Barrett Martin for safe keeping and the intention of passing it on. This transcription was undertaken to preserve history for the family of Louisa Beaubien Barrett and the community of Fort Sumner, New Mexico as the manuscript is aging and beginning to deteriorate as it’s almost 100 years old. This is the closest rendering of Louisa’s notes that could be deciphered and when she speaks of today, today is around 1930-1940.
