Freebee the Greebe

Freebee was born in 1975. I was a student teacher naturalist working at San Mateo Outdoor Education School in California. All week I taught sixth graders in a resident outdoor school, and on weekends I drove to Santa Cruz to attend graduate school classes at the university. In my spare time, I took up surfing. I had a surfboard, wetsuit, and a small car that could carry my board with the tail hanging out the back window. It was all very cool!However, surfing was too scary for me. The big ocean waves had a huge attitude. I discovered that the surfboard had a better purpose. It could carry me out beyond the surf where lots of different birds were hanging out. I began spending my time among the ducks and the grebes. It was as if I became one of them on my surfboard. It was here that Freebee cracked out of her shell and came to life in this book.Freebee took her first breath on an old fashioned typewriter. Thirty-eight years later, in a much different world, Freebee has finally blossomed into life, via watercolors, by my dearest friend, Mary Gladitsch.
