From Farmer To Civil War Hero: Milo Lester Starks

Milo Lester Starks, a young, quiet farm boy from the Town of Sweden in Monroe County, NY, unexpectedly became the town's hero on July 2, 1862 at the Battle of Little Round Top. When his beloved and admired Colonel Patrick O'Rourke was killed soon after arriving at the crest of a large hill, Milo rallied the men of Company A and headed down the steep slope to face the approaching enemy. Without hesitation, he organized Companies A & G, many of whom had not loaded their muskets, and placed them into lines and led them straight for the enemy, who soon scattered into the woods. It was many years before the story of Milo Lester Starks heroism and his impact on the results of the war became known by the townspeople. Upon realizing his importance to the area, they voted to place an Historic Marker next to his house on South Lake Road in the town of Sweden. While this book is a story of Milo’s place in history, it’s also a family story. You’ll meet his father, stepmother, and his many interesting siblings, all of whom weave a tale of struggles, dreams, and losses. The book is a time-capsule of history. The family was close, and Incidents which took place in the 1854-1864 time period, including church socials, winter sleighrides, quilting bees, sudden illnesses, gossip sessions, births and deaths are all woven into Milo’s book and brings readers back to a long-ago time in history, when life was simpler.
