From Ireland to America: Celebrating the Story of the Skelly Family of Woodbury, Connecticut

Esther Elizabeth Behan (1837-1917) and Michael Francis (1836-1912) Skelly’s immigration from Ireland to the United States and subsequent settlement in Connecticut during the mid-nineteenth century are witnessed by a wealth of surviving structures, landscape, objects, images, documents, and oral history. The Skelly home, an extant residence dating from the 1680s with a shop and barn located in “The Hollow” of Woodbury, Connecticut, is the primary setting for this story. In addition, the city of Waterbury, 12 miles to the east, plays a significant supporting role in the Skelly family narrative. Michael became one of Woodbury’s most celebrated citizens and was known throughout the State of Connecticut. Esther, Michael, and their descendants to the seventh generation, have contributed in countless ways to the wellbeing and character of the country of their adoption. Themes that dominate the Skelly story include: family values; Irish Catholic identity and faithfulness; acceptance in a time of nativism; dedication to hard work; community engagement; and commitment to education. But our family story begins in the small Irish towns of Carrow Beg and Abbeyleix….
