Diana Burdett was born in a small fishing village in British Columbia, Canada in 1921. At the age of four, she met another little four-year old girl, a Japanese Canadian named Nobuko Saimoto and that friendship set Diana on a path to becoming part of the newly formed Canadian Women's Army Corps in 1942, being selected for the S-20 Japanese Military Intelligence Language School and being sent to work for U.S. Army Intelligence at the super secret Camp Ritchie outside Washington, DC. Diana's friendship with Nobuko, also introduced her not only to the Japanese language but to the culture and history of Japan and to a relationship with Nobuko and her family that lasted her entire life. Diana was barely 21 when the greatest adventure in her life began and with a plethora of young officers who were intrigued with the Canadian linguist, Diana had her share of dance and dinner partners, became engaged routinely and traveled around the U.S. every chance she could get. When the European war ended, she had yet another opportunity for a grand adventure and set her sights on a train trip across the U.S. that would provide the jumping off point for an even bigger adventure serving on General MacArthur's staff in Occupied Japan, But that is another story.
