This volume of 'Harmony and Melody' carries the approach and method of Vol. I further along the path. The study of harmony leads from secondary dominants, modulation, diminished sevenths,and ninth chords to more complex areas of chromatic borrowed and altered chords and finally, to the vigorous appearance of complex modern techniques. At the same time, the study of melody, starting with the period, double period, phrase group, and two- and three-part forms, leads to contemporary melodic practice. In this volume, as in its predecessor, general principals are derived directly from the music of the masters; and no artificial barriers are raised between various musical styles or periods. The spectrum shifts broadly from Monteverdi to Bartok and back again from Ives to Claude le Jeune, with passing salutes to Chopin or Wagner, to Gershwin or Burton Lane, along the way.
