This book contains three stage plays: Henry's Dilemma, Death and the Ghostwriter's Ghostwriter, andCousins. From the back cover: "I had the pleasure of directing a reading of Henry's Dilemma, by Leonard Bogarad, at Abingdon Theatre Company in New York City...I was taken by the snappy, witty dialogue and was utterly smitten by the character of Caroline Bainbridge, one of the most delightful creations I had come across in some time – smart, sexy, stylish, confident, and supremely witty. A perfect foil to Caroline is the character of her cousin, Henry Bainbridge, who believes himself to be Henry David Thoreau, and as I reached the climax, I wasn't prepared for the metaphysical depth lurking behind the hilarity and hijinks as Caroline battles for Henry's sanity, sometimes helped, sometimes hindered by an amusing pair of groomsmen, Douglas and Trevor. I subsequently read another script by Leonard, Death and the Ghostwriter’s Ghostwriter, which I highly enjoyed, and it cemented my perception of Leonard as a hugely creative, daring, hilarious writer with a unique voice that deserves a wide audience." - Brian Tom O'Connor, author of Awareness Games and Awareness Adventures Henry's Dilemma: It is the night before Henry Bainbridge's wedding day, and he calls his fiancé and tells her that he is in fact Henry David Thoreau. Not surprisingly she freaks and demands that he must recant, or the wedding is off. The play opens with the hungover Henry, his best man Douglas and Groomsman Trevor dressed for the wedding recounting the bachelor party when Henry realizes his dilemma: he must recant, but he is an honest man and truly believes he is Thoreau incarnate. Enter Caroline Bainbridge, Henry’s first cousin, and the true Thoreau, who declares she is a wood sprite, a psychiatrist, and a Ph.D. neurobiologist. Hijinks and metaphysics ensue in this comedy about Thoreau and the struggle to see the wedding take place if Caroline can compel Henry out of his delusion. Out of desperation, in the end, Caroline employs a mind-blowing tactic, but will Henry solve his dilemma? Death and the Ghostwriter's Ghostwriter: From the opening kick in the shins to the final kick to the killer's leg it is a non-stop thrill ride of conflict and laughs. Blake the hero and ghostwriter's ghostwriter returns to his former place of employment to find his ex-boss, the hostile and unstable Carmen, who is none too pleased to see him. Having to ghostwrite a mystery Blake concocts a story about a bridge foursome where one of them is a psychopathic murderer. Strangely his made-up story turns out to be true as it is the story of his own bridge foursome. But who did it? Prescott the disgruntled newspaper reporter, Sonya the abusive anthropologist, or Diane the passive-aggressive psychiatrist who has a feeling that murder is in the air from the start. Or is it Blake or even Carmen? Death and the Ghostwriter's Ghostwriter is a murder mystery/comedy full of repartee, repartee! And who is the intended victim? When the dust settles, and Blake's true identity is revealed, one of them lies dead on the floor. Cousins: Nash and Finn are two drifters who find themselves in the Arizona desert with seven dollars to their name and yet they own the night sky. Nash an ex-Marine and half Native American has been looking after Finn for years. Enter Lucy and Ray a beautician, and a used car salesman, respectively. After a peyote trip Ray loses it and he swears that he will kill them all as he drives off screaming into the night. The meaning of life is delved into during the details of Lucy's peyote trip. Lucy joins Nash and Finn on the road to discover the kingdom of heaven in this life, but Ray has other plans. Cousins is a play about friendship, the relatedness of all things, and the quest for enlightenment.
