Hidden Valley Kings: Through the Eyes of A King

This book is part of a series that delves into my life and struggles. My name is Roscoe Abell, one of the founders of the Hidden Valley Kings, a gang named after the neighborhood I grew up in. The Hidden Valley Kings (HVK) gained notoriety through their appearance on the popular TV series “Gangland.” I was also featured in ASIS, an Urban magazine. During my first 43 years of life, I spent approximately 25 years in prison, and it is there that I underwent a remarkable transformation. I shifted my criminal mentality into embracing a revolutionary perspective and through community programs that I helped create, I hope to work with Black youth in an effort to reduce gang violence. In this book, I share my story, providing a firsthand account of my life as a King. The Kings trace their roots back to the Almighty Vice Lords, an organization that originated in Chicago. While others have tried to tell my story before, none have succeeded. Join me as I take you on a journey through the city of Charlotte, NC, exposing the realities of murder, kidnapping, robbery, drug dealing, prison, and the pursuit of self-knowledge. We strive to educate youth about discipline, courage, Black History, oppression, and self-identity, echoing the principles of these influential figures. Chairman Roscoe Abell, a reformed ex-gang member who served 30 years in the system, now dedicates his time to mentoring children and guiding them away from gangs and Street influence.
