Hop, Skip, and Jump

“Longevity is a gift, escaping Alzheimer’s is a blessing.” Evelyn Taylor Stamps At the time I am writing this latest book, I am eighty-six years old. Can you believe it? I am amazed the way my memory hops, skips, and jumps from one encounter to another. There are a sundry of books written about aging, memory, muscle loss, etcetera. Many are written by projectors. Projectors are those who have not actually experienced the aging process so they project a comparison without actual experience. However, there are a few that are written by seniors. If not, there should be. There are countless reasons to write a book that shares uplifting memories. We are living longer, thus we continue to build from the richness of our minds. These memories define us. Who better to share this knowledge with seniors than another senior. As I approach the evening of my life, I am reminded of the following quote: “Soon we may join the innumerable caravan which moves to that mysterious realm. Yet a few days, and the all beholding sun shall see no more” (William Cullen Bryant). Sharing my memories revived my youth. It’s like rebooting my computer. Memories are like streams of running water. I am a child again in my grandparents’ home. I am in a wrestling match with one of my brothers. I remember my first kiss, my first heartbreak. His name was Webster, we were both ten years old. Yes, my mind hops from one idea to another, skips over one thing and jumps on another. Life indeed at this point can be described as a Hop, Skip and Jump.
