After Selma, spring 1965, Dr. King enlisted Boston area students to go to South Carolina with a Brandeis University SCOPE summer voter registration project. Sheltered in black homes in Richland, Kershaw and Calhoun Counties, South Carolina, they placed themselves in the service of local black leaders in the struggle for civil rights. For these kids, the reward for confronting intimidation, segregation and poverty was knowing they’d taken action some rich lessons in social change and life.
