John Daisy (Shonto's Kid Series)

After the great civil war, misfits, criminals, uprooted families and gold seekers streamed west. The Indian wars were over, and the losers were sent to reservations. Some refused. John Daisy, a White Mountain Apache, escaped the reservation by traveling into the vast, open land of the Great Plains with his white blood brother, known simply as Kid. They lived an idyllic life, traveling, hunting and living free. If they needed money, they captured wild mustangs, broke them and sold them. Then they came upon a burned-out wagon with the family laying where they had died. All but the two sisters. Ten and fifteen years old. Still alive, traumatized and very alone. So much for Idyllic.
