Today, we live in a time of rapidly shifting academic landscapes, growing challenges to freedom of thought and expression, tightening immigration policies, and vibrant discourse surrounding diversity, mentorship, and inclusion in higher education. It is within this critical moment in time that Journeys of Successful Korean Professors: Experiences, Reflections, and Advice is published.
This book is not merely a career guide. Rather, it serves as a powerful testimony and record of perseverance, cultural negotiation, and unseen labor experienced by Korean and Korean American scholars navigating the competitive and complex world of American academia. The collection of stories, reflections, and advice contained in these pages is an invaluable resource for students preparing to study abroad, current international scholars, and early-career academics alike. While the book centers on Korean voices, it offers universal insights and empathy for all who traverse the academic journey, whether you are a graduate student preparing for your first faculty interview, a researcher learning the norms of a new scholarly culture, or a senior professor seeking better support from colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
Moreover, by publishing this volume in both English and Korean, we affirm that the preservation of oneβs native language and ethnic identity is not a barrier to academic success, but rather a valuable and meaningful asset. This book is designed as a companion for all who are preparing for, or already traveling, the path of scholarly life. We honor the transnational experiences of scholars who enrich American higher education and emphasize the fact that their voices are more vital today than ever before.
This book explores the following themes: Theme 1: The Transition from Graduate Student to Scholar Theme 2: Balancing Research and Teaching Theme 3: Managing Relationships with Students Theme 4: Establishing a Professional Identity as a Professor Theme 5: Challenges in Academic Publishing Theme 6: Leadership as a Faculty Member Theme 7: Collaborative Research and Partnership Experiences Theme 8: The Importance of Mentoring Theme 9: Sustaining Passion for Oneβs Field of Research Theme 10: International Academic Experiences Theme 11: Responsibilities of a Professor
