Kansas Prairie Promises

In 1859, life on the prairie was hard on adults. For children it was both exciting and brutal. When Kansas Prairie Promises begins, Lucinda is eleven years old. When her mother dies, she takes on the role of caregiver for her two younger sisters. Her father, a cavalry officer at the Fort Riley, Kansas, Army post is often called to duty. Lucinda meets and forms a lifelong friendship with Maddie, a girl her own age, who is held as a slave. Their friendship continues in secrecy and years of separation. Lucinda never gives up her hope to reunite with her friend Maddie. As Lucinda tests and pushes the limits placed on women by the roles of society in her time, she always remembers her promises and Dominic, the man is unable to forget.
